Preface
The complete contents of this ebook were first published in 2004 as part of Volume 1 of my book entitled 'Microphone Arrays for Stereo and Multichannel Sound Recording'. The design of microphone arrays requires a fundamental knowledge of the physics of microphones, especially the complexities of directivity design and also the typical frequency response of each microphone system.
I spent some 40 years teaching microphone technology and sound recording practice to adult education students. In the context of this teaching I needed to adapt many of the teaching tools that were available in the normal scholastic education environment. Mathematics was obviously one of the main difficulties that had to be overcome, or at least be restricted to elementary trigonometry and algebra. I have used many photographs and diagrams, as well as many detailed graphical representations, to explain as simply as possible this fascinating world of microphone technology.
I would not have been able to go into so much detail without the help in particular from three persons, Jorg Wuttke (Technical Director of Schoeps, Germany from 1970 to 2007), Chris Woolf (Consultant to Rycote, UK at that time) and David Josephson (CEO of JosephsonEngineering,USA).
